Hunter lay on the military-grade cot and stared at the ceiling. He often did this as morning came on. For a few minutes each morning, Hunter would watch as the sunrise made shapes along the ceiling of his den. As he did so, he would let Hunter go to sleep first, and allow the little bit of him that was still Jim shine through.

It wasn’t schizophrenia. Nor did he have the pretend multiple personality syndrome that movies always claimed existed. In the few moments of dawn he just let the vulnerable part of himself, usually shoved into the back of his mind, out to breathe. Hunter had named all the vulnerability left in him Jim, and it had to come out every once and a while. So Hunter picked the safest time of the day, when Vancouver basked in the daily glow. Just for a minute, Jim could think about Jonah, about how he missed his brother, especially now that their parents had passed. For that same minute, he could think of Caitlin, not the death that had transformed Jim into Hunter but Caitlin the woman. He thought about the life he could have had with her, a life denied to both of them. When the moment was gone, Jim would go back into the dark recesses of Hunter.
